Windmill/Wind Turbine Explosion
By
The braking mechanism that limits the speed of the wind turbine broke during a storm in Denmark. This was the outcome. 02/22-2008.

Bonus info:
-The tower of the mill was 60m high
-Wind speed was probably around 30 m/s
-You can see a truck at the base of the mill, but nobody was hurt. The mill had been evacuated 400m in each direction.

That is so called ” …
That is so called “Danish concept” of regulation. The blades are in fixed angle (they can’t rotate around their longer axis) so at extreme wind speeds the blades fall apart. Fortunately the Danish concept is obsolete. At the moment the best and the most common version i the pitch regulated, slow speed synchronous generator concept.

You should see the …
You should see the 5.0Mw WTG that they put offshore! It has an internal crane, sleeping quarters for a crew and a freakin helicopter landing pad on it! You can crawl down the main shaft. Its really impressive… I worked for GE Wind Energy and built the 1.5Mw WTG it made our turbine look like a little and ours sat on a 80m tower and weighs in at 121,000Lbs not including the Hub, which weighs 32,000Lbs and each blade at2,400Lbs a piece.. 3 blades on it…

when in high wings …
when in high wings the balde turn so they dont catch the wind, but this malfunctioned, the brakes burned out & the turbine tore itself apart with centrifugal force

now then mr smart …
now then mr smart matthewsneider123 thanks for information as to how vestas blades function!, did you read about this? haha, well i can tell you that there is a vestas service van outside the turbine and with my EXPEIRIENCE they would of been inside on the bottom platform or in their van having a wank, either way they will be seen by doctors for years to come.

Actually, these …
Actually, these turbines have sensors in them that cause the head of the turbine-the upper part that the blades attach to-to swivel either towards or away from the wind. Normally, this is used to maximize energy output of the turbine’s speed, but in cases of high winds, the turbine SHOULD turn away from the wind to keep speed below safety regulations. Obviously, this turbine is malfunctioning, hence why everyone was evacuated from the area and why there were people waiting around to film this.

@StinkyCheese9999 I …
@StinkyCheese9999 I think they knew something was going wrong with it in the first place– they aren’t supposed to spin that fast. I think it’s been suggested that the load or brake had broken or been disconnected, and so it was spinning uncontrolled with no resistance. It was probably a relatively brief matter of time once the transmission went.
